Apprenticeships in Scotland attended the 3rd
Annual Youth Employment Conference on the 24th September 2013 which
brought together some of the key professionals to discuss solutions for youth
unemployment.
Our team offered a youth perspective on the matters arising
throughout the day and one of our Youth Opportunities Advisers, Shannen Scott,
contributed to the debate of the Public Sectors’ responsibility. The Chairman
of the Youth Employment Conference, Alan Sinclair, asked:
“How do you feel about the 1% targets that have been set by
the public sector, with regards to recruiting young people?” to which Shannen
replied:
“It depends on the size of the organisation, I am always
open to making it a bigger target. I think everyone shares that thought, we need
to aim high. Most of the time we meet these targets so why not aim higher?
There are a lot of organisations that do the same thing, my suggestion would be
to collaborate more in a partnership and sky rocket past these targets. There
are a lot of young people in the 16-24 age bracket that are really keen to work
and recognise public sector is a good way to start.”
Apprenticeships in Scotland is a youth led organisation, we
feel the peer to peer approach really works when communicating with young
people. We work with employers and training providers to break down some of the
barriers that exist when attracting candidates.

we can do to help you.
