More than just a blether

On Sunday 23 March 2014, the brand new National Society of Apprentices Scotland will be launched at NUS Scotland Conference in Dundee. The National Society of Apprentices Scotland exists to represent apprentices in Scotland.

Apprentices from across Scotland are invited for the launch of the National Society of Apprentices Scotland.

The event will provide an opportunity for apprentices in Scotland to meet other apprentices, talk about their experiences of being an apprentice and to shape the work of the National Society of Apprentices in Scotland.

The interim leadership of the National Society of Apprentices in Scotland will also be chosen at the launch and apprentices in Scotland have the chance to volunteer to be part of the team that shapes the organisation.

Where will it take place?

The launch of the National Society of Apprentices will take place at the Apex City Quay Hotel, Dundee from 12-4 on Sunday 23 March 2014. Lunch will be provided for those attending.

Lloyds Banking Group Recruiting 150 Apprentices in Scotland

Lloyds Banking Group says it is creating 150 new apprenticeships in Scotland including 45 new training posts in Tayside and Fife.

The part-taxpayer-owned bank said the bulk of the new roles — including 30 in Dundee and a further 15 in Dunfermline — will be added in its telephone banking division.

The remainder of the new posts will be created in group operations and in Bank of Scotland and those opportunities will be spread across the country.

The move came as Scottish Apprenticeship Week began in earnest.

Robin Bulloch, deputy chairman of Lloyds Banking Group’s Scottish Executive Committee, said he was delighted the bank was able to offer a helping hand for some young Scots looking for work.

“Building people’s skills and aspirations can make a real impact in tackling youth employment by providing many young people with that crucial first step on the employment ladder.

“Lloyds Banking Group is Scotland’s largest financial services employer and this announcement demonstrates our continuing commitment to invest in Scotland.”

Skills Development Scotland Launch 2013 Modern Apprenticeship Scheme

The SDS Launch of the 2013 Modern Apprenticeship Scheme took place at the Tennent’s Training Academy.

The lives of 25,000 young people in Scotland have been transformed in 2012/13 by taking up a Modern Apprenticeship (MA) opportunity.

The Scottish Government and Skills Development Scotland have confirmed that the target to enhance the job prospects of 25,000 young people through training in a key sector has been met for a second year.

Minister for Youth Employment Angela Constance marked the occasion by meeting a number of MAs working at the Tennent’s Training Academy in Glasgow.

She said: “The Scottish Government recognises the value of the Modern Apprenticeship programme in developing and improving the skills of our young people. An MA gives them a job and a qualification, as well as a real entry point to the working world. This is precisely why we set ourselves the challenging target to offer 25,000 MA opportunities for each year of the current Parliament and I am delighted that the target has again been reached. Two Wishaw Tradesmen Get Jobs Boost from Modern Apprenticeships

Two young tradesmen from Wishaw are among thousands of people in Scotland to have succeeded in the jobs market after carrying out Modern Apprenticeships.

A recent survey of 2000 former apprentices carried out by Skills Development Scotland showed 92 per cent of those questioned were still in employment six months after their training finished.

This is the case for mechanic Kane Lambert (22) who completed his apprenticeship in 2012 with Hallidays Garage in Wishaw, and is still with them a year down the line...READ MORE

McDonalds to Create Around 200 Jobs in Scotland

FAST-FOOD chain McDonald’s is creating about 200 new jobs in Scotland this year.

The move is part of a UK-wide recruitment drive which will see 2,500 new positions filled in 2013.

It follows 3,500 jobs created by McDonald’s last year, of which 70 per cent were taken by young people under the age of 21.

The company said its growth has been driven by investment in its restaurants, technology, extended opening hours and menu choice. READ MORE

10 Network Rail Apprentices are Sought

There are around 240 places available on the 2013 Network Rail advanced apprenticeship scheme, 10 of which are based in Scoland, and chief executive David Higgins wants parents, educators and young people alike to realise the future career opportunities that an apprenticeship can bring, including a university education at work.

“There are many paths to achieve a successful career” says Higgins. Whether you join straight from school or after college or work, the apprenticeship programme can be the first step to a challenging career.

An apprenticeship can also open doors to a university education. Whilst many apprentices go on to be team leaders and rise through the ranks, Network Rail also helps those who want to achieve further qualifications the chance to study part-time for a Higher National Certificate in engineering and then onto a foundation degree and a bachelors at Sheffield Hallam University. Tennent's Launches Unique Apprenticeship for Scottish Chefs

Tennent's Training Academy, situated on the site of Tennent's Brewery in Glasgow, has launched a new, innovative Modern Apprentice training programme for young chefs across Scotland in a bid to raise the standards of kitchen staff across the nation.

The free 12-month programme is open to young chefs under the age of 25 in full-time employment at a Scottish hospitality business. It is offered under the Government's Modern Apprentice scheme in partnership with the Federation of Chefs for Scotland, with over 450 people already enrolled.

Unlike other apprenticeship courses offered by educational institutions, the Tennent's Training Modern Apprenticeship aims to go a step further, giving apprentices 11 free master classes at the Academy, and the opportunity to take part in regular field trips to learn about the sourcing of ingredients and seasonality.

In addition they will receive monthly site visits and training sessions in their own workplace from a qualified trainer. It also gives them membership to the Federation and a Scottish Vocational Qualification (SVQ) Level 2 or 3 in Professional Cookery.

Shipyard Engineer is named Top Apprentice

At just 22 years old, Scotland’s top apprentice is driving the installation of no less than eleven engineering systems onto ships for BAE Systems.

Glasgow’s Robert Tosh was crowned Scotland’s Modern Apprentice of the Year at Scotland’s Modern Apprenticeship Awards in Glasgow on Wednesday 21 November.

Robert, from Crookston, also won the Construction and Production Apprentice of the Year category at the event, sponsored by sector skills council Semta. The judges were bowled over by Robert’s hard work and by his commitment to his apprenticeship and future ambitions. READ MORE
